Choosing Reliable Moving Boxes

Moving is always a chore. But, when it’s necessary, you should make it as easy as possible on yourself. Most people have a lot of small things to move. Books, DVDs, candles and hundreds of other items throughout their house or apartment can create a headache on moving day if you don’t plan properly. One of the most valuable supplies you can purchase are moving boxes. Small, compact and plain-looking, you’ll find that they can make moving day much easier.

How They’re Constructed

Most boxes are made from corrugated cardboard. They come with different thicknesses. So, if you’re planning to move heavy items (such as textbooks), invest in the stronger boxes. Most professional moving companies use boxes with a 32 ECT (Edge Crush Test) rating. These can hold up to 200 lbs. of material. Stronger boxes are generally more expensive. However, if you need to ensure the items you’re transferring aren’t damaged, don’t buy anything with less than a 32 ECT rating.

Why Size Matters

You can purchase moving boxes that are large. But, you may want to avoid doing so for 2 reasons. First, if you’re packing heavy books, a large box may be too heavy for one person to carry. Second, one of the most common reasons for boxes to become damaged during a move is that they’re not packed full. The larger the box, the greater likelihood that there will be empty space within.

Buy More Than You Need

Your first instinct during a move is to conserve funds. Moving is expensive, so money spent on supplies that are unnecessary can have a major impact. However, consider buying more moving boxes than you think you’ll need. They’re relatively inexpensive and most people end up using more than they thought they would. The worst case is that you’ll have spent a few extra dollars on supplies you don’t use. But, chances are, you’ll find a use for the “extra” boxes somehow.
