How to Find A Good Job When Your Spouse Is Relocating

Finding Job After Relocating1. Contact your employer as soon as the move is finalized. Are there any opportunities available in your new town? Your company may have a branch office or affiliate in your new location where you would be able to transfer.

2. Contact your spouse’s employer to ascertain what, if any, provisions can be made for a relocating (called “trailing”) spouse. Is there a career counselor available at your disposal? What benefits are available from your spouse’s company for you?

3. After giving notice to your present company, contact competitors and business associates in your new town to find out if any opportunities exist. Professional networking works!

4. Contact your new town’s Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, and other civic organizations. They may be able to refer you to a job search firm or other resource.

5. Utilize the Internet for possible job postings in your new area. Review onlineĀ job and careerĀ resources for professional advice.

6. After you move, join local civic and volunteer organizations in order to meet new contacts.

7. Re-evaluate your career. Are you happy doing what you do? Should you plan for a career change? Is it something that you can develop into an e-commerce business, entrepreneurial concern or work-at-home situation? If not, do you have a special skill or interest that can be developed into a “portable career?”

8. Inquire about telecommuting or a remote office situation. In this electronic age, you may be able to work from your new home easily via e-mail, fax and teleconferencing.

9. Make sure your resume is up-to-date with your latest information. Consider different resume formats for each job type you apply for.

If you find yourself struggling with your career decision, this might be a good time to consider writing a career plan.

Be flexible when looking for a challenging new job. Sometimes, the best opportunities are the ones you least expect.
