How To Choose And Maintain A Self Storage Unit
1. Determine what size unit you’ll need. Are you storing furniture, appliances and other large, bulky items? Or are you just storing files, books and smaller boxes?
2. Thoroughly inspect the storage space. Is it clean and dry? Make sure the doors are in working order.
3. Place wooden pallets on concrete floors for ventilation purposes. This will also help belongings stay dry. Leave a walkway around the edge of the unit – even the back – for both ventilation and access.
4. Can you lock the storage unit yourself?
5. Make sure furniture is covered and protected.
6. Store heavier boxes on the bottom of piles, lighter and fragile items near the top.
7. Keep items you use frequently near the front of the unit. Items you seldom need should be stored near the back.
8. Label all boxes, make detailed lists of their contents and keep the inventory in your files.
9. Make sure all boxes are filled to capacity to avoid tipping.
Check on your belongings frequently to make sure they remain in good condition. Read your contract!
